Oil Painters of America Summer Online Showcase

My husband and I got home from a backpacking trip, and I was catching up on my email the next day. What a lovely surprise to find that my painting, To See Beyond, was awarded third place in the OPA Summer Online Showcase! This is probably one of my favorite paintings of my female greyhound, Train, that I've done to date. Her personality is so proud and strong, yet playful and sweet. I think she knows how beautiful she is, too.

The title comes from one of my favorite quotes by Robert Henri from his book, The Art Spirit: “There are moments in our lives, there are moments in a day, where we seem to see beyond the usual. We reach then into reality. Such are the moments of our greatest happiness. Such are the moments of our greatest wisdom.”  I feel this often when I look at her.

I'm going to share this lovely painting on facebook, as I did with "Dreamscapes." I particularly love your portraits of dogs. This one is exquisite. I enjoyed reading the story of the origin of her name, "To See Beyond." Some dogs seem to be models. My friend had such a one, whom I was baby-sitting for a month. When I lay on the deck with my camera, she came the right distance from me and lay down in a perfect pose. Snap. Did you work from photos?

Marian, thank you so much for the lovely comment! She truly is a model - every move inspires me.. there are times throughout each day where I just stop what I'm doing and stare at her, thinking she's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen..
As far as working from photos, I've done quick paint studies from life, and try to sketch from life most days, but work mainly from photos, as they aren't in the habit of getting up and walking away.. ;)
